"In his latest Netflix series, 'Supacell,' creator Rapman delves into the lives of five ordinary Black South Londoners who unexpectedly acquire superpowers. While the show showcases the excitement of supernatural abilities and the allure of science fiction, it also tackles significant themes that disproportionately affect Black communities. These include issues such as human trafficking, intense surveillance, pervasive global anti-Blackness, and exploitative medical practices.
The series opens with a jarring scene: an older Black woman, clad in a hospital gown, runs desperately through a dark corridor. Emerging into sunlight, she is ruthlessly gunned down and dragged back through the facility while imprisoned Black onlookers watch in horror from glass cells. The narrative then shifts to familiar territory: the bustling streets of modern South London, introducing characters like Michael (played excellently by Tosin Cole), a nervous package courier contemplating a marriage proposal to his longtime girlfriend, Dionne (Adelayo Adedayo). Elsewhere in the neighborhood, Andre (Eric Kofi Abrefa) strives to reconnect with his teenage son following a prison sentence."
